http://www.examiner.com/article/times-square-billboards-given-up-for-art Jennifer Eberhart NY Art Examiner Times Square billboards given up for art This Monday, June 18, instead of seeing glaring advertisements on the Times Square billboards, you’ll see art. In collaboration with the Times Square Alliance and Artists Wanted, nonprofit arts organization chashama has designed an exhibition of artist’s works to be displayed on the screens of the busiest area of New York City. Billboard owners NASDAQ, Thomas Reuters, Clear Channel Spectacolor, and a2a MEDIA will donate their displays for the day so that these artworks can be enjoyed by all. Artists from around the world were invited to participate and compete for awards, which include not only the Times Square billboards but inclusion in a “Art Takes Times Square” book to be distributed worldwide, as well as a grand prize of $10,000 cash. A winner’s party will be held on the night of June 18, featuring Questlove, a singer from the Roots. The judging of the works submitted was by both chashama and Artists Wanted, and by popular vote – and by voting, participants were put in the running for a prize themselves. After viewing the works, a voter was able to “collect” art . A $5000 Dream Vacation prize known as the “Collector Award” will be given to the voter with the best collection. Artists who will be featured include Ellen Espelund, Tokio Kuniyoshi, Mehriban Efendi, and Rozita Fogelman. Artists come from all areas of the world and artworks range from photography to painting to digital works. This collaboration is one that is sure to bring the most exciting works of art to the world stage. The viewing begins on June 18 with the ringing of the NASDAQ bell. Don’t miss your chance to see some great works of art displayed digitally for millions of visitors in Times Square. Jennifer Eberhart, NY Art Examiner
